Conferences on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice

October 30 to November 1, 2014
Atlanta, GA
Co-sponsors: The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, Arnold P. Gold Foundation, and the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence

It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that we are able to announce that the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence is co-sponsoring the first national conference on “Advancing Compassionate, Patient- and Family-Centered Care through Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice.” The University of Chicago Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence is the academic partner for this conference in collaboration with the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation with funding from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.

This three-day conference will focus on building greater understanding of and knowledge about current initiatives to further advance professional education for compassionate and collaborative, patient-centered healthcare. Dr. Rich Levin, President and CEO of the Gold Foundation, commented recently “we are at a critical time in medicine when a real transformation of the medical model is possible.” The conference will be held in Atlanta, Georgia from Thursday, October 30th through Saturday, November 1st, 2014.

The conference planning committee includes representatives from 12 organizations that are dedicated to the advancement of compassionate and patient-centered healthcare.

Members of the conference planning committee are:

  • Center to Advance Palliative Care
  • Emory University
  • Arnold P. Gold Foundation
  • Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care
  • Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care
  • Josiah Macy Foundation
  • Massachusetts General Hospital
  • Planetree
  • Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare
  • University of Chicago Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence
  • University of Minnesota
  • University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing

With every interaction across the continuum of care, patients will reliably receive high quality, effective care that is focused on their needs, concerns and preferences and is compassionate, collaborative and coordinated. Without compassion, care may be technically excellent but depersonalized and cannot address the unique cultures, concerns, distress and suffering of patients and their families.

This conference will build on current initiatives to advance interprofessional education for compassionate and collaborative, patient-centered care. Participants will identify models and opportunities, as well as barriers that must be addressed to ensure that the values, knowledge and behaviors needed to provide such care are explicitly taught, demonstrated, supported and sustained within and across clinical settings.
