Associate Junior Faculty Scholars

Each year, the nomination process for Junior Faculty Scholars consistently generates many exceptional candidate recommendations from all clinical departments. In an effort to retain involvement from these superb faculty, the position of Associate Junior Faculty Scholar was created in 2012. Associate Junior Faculty Scholars are eligible to participate in all Bucksbaum Institute programs and each spring they may apply for funding through the Bucksbaum Institute Pilot Grant Program.

Naoum Issa, MD, PhD

Dr. Issa is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology, specializing in adult epilepsy. He received his doctoral degrees at the University of Texas – Southwestern, completing a research fellowship at UCSF and his neurology residency and clinical neurophysiology fellowship at the University of Chicago.

His teaching focus is on preclinical neurology education, including neuroanatomy and neural systems, and he directs the medical neurobiology course in the Pritzker School of Medicine. With a background in neuroimaging and cortical physiology, his research centers around developing non-invasive techniques for the early diagnosis of central nervous system disorders like temporal lobe epilepsy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Dr. Shilpa Iyer is an Assistant Professor of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (Urogynecology) in the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. She first completed a joint degree in medicine and public health with a focus on epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She then completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the combined program at Massachusetts General Hospital/ Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. She then returned to Chicago to complete a fellowship in FPMRS at the University of Chicago before joining the faculty in July 2017. Her clinical focus is pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder, stress incontinence, bladder pain, fistulas, and other complex pelvic floor disorders. She often has medical students, residents, and fellows in her clinic and operating room and enjoys clinical and surgical teaching. Her research interests include the pathophysiology and treatment of overactive bladder and bladder pain as well as long term clinical outcome measures. She has presented at national and international meetings, published in urogynecology journals, and is most proud of mentoring trainees in their research endeavors.

Lindsay Jaeger, MD

Bio

Dr. Lindsay Jaeger is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and the Medical Director of the Comer Children’s Emergency Room. She is also the Medical Directors of the UChicago Medicine sections of Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Preparedness. Dr. Jaeger received her medical doctorate from Tulane University School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency training at The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Her post-doctoral training also included fellowships in pediatric emergency medicine and emergency medicine ultrasound at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine and an EMS fellowship at UChicago Medicine.

Dr. Jaeger presented research at several national conventions, including an EMS Telemedicine Pilot project at the National Association of EMS Physicians Annual Meeting. Much of her research experience is multidisciplinary, focusing on pediatrics as well as obstetrics, gynecology, nephrology, and cardiology, among others. Dr. Jaeger also serves on the EMS Medical Directors Consortium committee for Chicago EMS, the EMS for Children Illinois Chapter, and is the Co-Chair of a subcommittee of the National EMS for
Children. Through working with each of these organizations, her focus is on developing EMS protocols, policies, procedures on pediatric cardiac arrest and airway care, transport protocols, and education on medication administration. This focus on pediatric prehospital care reduces health disparities by addressing educational and policy gaps and barriers. As of 2023, Dr. Jaeger has joined the faculty at Emory University.

Rajesh Jain, MD

Rajesh K. Jain, MD, specializes in endocrinology and focuses on metabolic bone diseases. This includes osteoporosis, osteopenia, calcium disorders (including hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism), Vitamin D deficiency, Paget’s disease, and other metabolic bone disease. He is certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry to read and interpret bone density testing.

Dr. Jain conducts research in a variety of areas within osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. Some of the areas he conducts research in include trabecular bone score, the effects of physical activity and body fat on bone, diabetes-related fracture risk, and differences in fracture risk factors in racial and ethnic minorities. He is also an investigator for clinical trials in hypoparathyroidism.

Stacy Kahn, MD

Dr. Kahn is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Section of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, & Nutrition and is faculty at The MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. She received her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed her residency and fellowships in pediatric gastroenterology and medical ethics at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Kahn specializes in the evaluation and treatment of digestive diseases in children and adolescents. She has a particular interest in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Dr. Kahn is the founder and Director of the Transitional IBD Clinic, a unique program that provides multidisciplinary specialty care for teens and young adults with IBD. Dr. Kahn’s research focuses on novel treatments for IBD and improving patient care for patients with IBD. Specifically, she is interested on adherence, self-management, and the transition of care from pediatric to adult IBD specialists.

Dr. Kahn is a member of the faulty at Boston Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts.

Dr. Kavitt is an Associate Professor in the Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and Medical Director of the Center for Esophageal Diseases. He received his MD at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed internal medicine residency at the University of Chicago. He received his gastroenterology fellowship training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and also earned a Master of Public Health degree while at Vanderbilt.

Dr. Kavitt’s clinical and research interests focus on benign esophageal disorders, including eosinophilic esophagitis, GERD, esophageal motility disorders including achalasia, and the evaluation of patients with dysphagia.

Elizabeth Kertowidjojo, MD

Dr. Elizabeth Kertowidjojo is a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Pathology at the University of Chicago Medical Center, recognized for her expertise in gynecologic pathology. She completed an oncologic surgical pathology fellowship followed by a gynecologic pathology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Since joining the University of Chicago, Dr. Kertowidjojo has become integral to the management of complex gynecologic diseases, earning high regard from the obstetrics, gynecology, and gynecologic oncology teams.

Dr. Kertowidjojo is celebrated for her educational contributions, particularly her highly rated lectures for the Clinical Pathophysiology and Therapeutics Course and her exemplary teaching of pathology residents. She was honored with the Wendy Recant, MD Faculty Award for Teaching by the residents. Additionally, she mentors residents and fellows, guiding them to present at significant conferences like the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology annual meeting.

Her research involvement is notable, as she collaborates extensively with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology on clinician-driven initiatives, contributing significantly to their feasibility and success. Dr. Kertowidjojo received the Dr. Jacob Churg Award for Academic Development of Junior Pathologists, recognizing her potential to advance research initiatives related to disease mechanisms and patient care.

Abid Khan, MD

Dr. Abid Khan joined The University of Chicago Medicine in 2022 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and an Acute Care Surgeon at UChicago Medicine’s Level 1 Trauma Center.

Dr. Khan earned his Medical Doctorate from Wayne State University School of Medicine. Following his medical education, he completed a Residency in General Surgery at the John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County and Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois along with a Fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois.

Before joining UChicago Medicine, Dr. Khan served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Associate Program Director and Residency Site Director at the University of Colorado General Surgery Residency Program. As a clinician, he has practiced at UCHealth Memorial Hospital, UCHealth Grandview Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado in Colorado Springs.

Dr. Khan’s commitment to excellence is recognized by his peers and the medical community as he was honored with the Top Doctor Colorado Springs award by Colorado Springs Magazine in 2021.

Dr. Khan’s scholarly contributions include many authored or co-authored publications on various topics related to trauma and acute care surgery. Some of his notable publications include “Indicators of Survival and Favorable Functional Outcomes After Decompressive Craniectomy: A Multi-Institutional Retrospective Study,” “Clearing the Cervical Spine in Patients with Distracting Injuries: An AAST Multi-Institutional Trial,” and “Utilization of Percentage of Predicted Forced Vital Capacity to Stratify Rib Fracture Patients: An Updated Clinical Practice Guideline.”

In addition to his academic and clinical pursuits, Dr. Khan is an enthusiastic educator. He has delivered numerous presentations as part of grand rounds at various medical institutions, including Rush University Medical Center, Loyola University Medical Center, UCHealth Memorial Hospital, and UChicago Medicine. He has also been invited to speak at conferences and workshops on topics such as acute pancreatitis, surgical emergencies, and traumatic brain injury.

David Kiragu, MD

Dr. Kiragu is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of General Internal Medicine. He received his medical training at Northwestern University and was a medicine resident and chief resident at The University of Chicago at NorthShore. He provides comprehensive primary care to adults and is passionate about preventive health. He currently sits on the committee of the Kidney Transplant Program and provides both evaluation and care for the transplant candidates. He is also interested in systems improvements by identifying factors predictive of poor outcomes among kidney transplant patients. Dr. Kiragu is also involved in training medicine residents and medical students.

In 2015, Dr. Kiragu joined Wilson Medical Group in Wilson, NC.
